Longacre FIRST LEGO League Jr. dominated Farmington LEGO Fest Expo!
Longacre is definitely the leader of FLL Jr. in Farmington Public Schools. Boasting nine Junior teams this season, our coaches and teams participated in Farmington LEGO Fest Expo on December 10 at Farmington High School. This event was founded last year as the Longacre LEGO Fest as a brand new official FIRST event when it was clear there wasn’t enough space in the current events in metro Detroit. Our success last year led to us taking our event to a larger audience and opening it up to other local FIRST communities. We had 10 other teams join us at a morning and afternoon session. Our kids were able to show off their hard work during their challenge season. They researched honey bees and chose an animal that shares a habitat with this very important animal. They designed and built a LEGO model that contained early robotics elements that related to their animal’s environment. Each team was interviewed by high school level FIRST Robotics members and were awarded a team trophy in our non-competitive event. The kids enjoyed a day of learning about the next level of FIRST LEGO League, building STEM crafts, and had a blast driving the FRC Hackbot’s robot and shooting balls across the gym! We even had a mini dance party! Thanks to all the FIRST teams that made this event so powerful for these future scientists as well as Farmington Farmington Hills Education Foundation, Farmington PTA Council, Tech Girls, and Longacre PTA.
There will be a FLL Jr. Coach/Mentor meeting on January 25. Room/time is tba. We will be talking about next year’s registration opening in the spring and looking for a committee of K-3rd grade parent volunteers to take FLL Jr. into next year as Karen steps into a more active role in FLL and will help mentor the next generation of Junior leaders. Please join us and be a part of that conversation. We want to keep the Junior segment of FIRST LEGO League going strong in Longacre and that takes a lot of hands as parents graduate out of one level and into another.
